Intro to Projects
Video Placeholder Duration: 4-6 minutes Topics covered: What is a project, creating projects, project visibility, project features, project settings
What is a Project?
A Project is where the actual work happens in Plane. While a workspace is your organization's container, projects are where teams organize specific areas of work.
Each project contains:
- Work items — The tasks and issues your team needs to complete
- Cycles — Time-boxed sprints for iterative work
- Modules — Logical groupings of related work items
- Pages — Documentation and notes
- Views — Custom filtered perspectives on your work
Creating a Project
Quick Method
Press P anywhere in Plane to quickly create a new project.
Standard Method
- Navigate to Projects in the sidebar
- Click Add Project
- Fill in the required details
Project Details
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Project name | A descriptive name for your project |
| Identifier | A short code (e.g., PROJ) used in work item IDs like PROJ-123 |
| Description | Optional context about the project's purpose |
| Access level | Public or Private |
| Lead | Optional designated project guide |
Project Visibility
Projects can be either Public or Private:
Public Projects
- Visible to all workspace members
- Anyone in the workspace can self-join
- Best for company-wide initiatives where everyone should have visibility
Private Projects
- Only visible to explicitly invited members
- Project Admins control who can access
- Ideal for confidential or sensitive work
Project Features
Each project can have specific features enabled or disabled. This keeps the interface clean by showing only what you need:
| Feature | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Cycles | Sprint-based timeboxing for iterative work |
| Modules | Logical grouping of related work items |
| Views | Custom filtered perspectives |
| Pages | Documentation and knowledge base |
| Intake | Request capture and triage from external users |
| Time Tracking | Log and track time spent on work items |
To toggle features:
- Go to Project Settings → Features
- Enable or disable features as needed
Project Settings
Access project settings by clicking the three dots (⋯) next to your project name:
- General — Name, identifier, description, cover image
- Members — Manage who has access and their roles
- Features — Toggle optional features on/off
- States — Customize workflow states
- Labels — Create and manage labels
- Estimates — Configure estimation systems
- Automations — Set up workflow automations
Project Roles
Within a project, members can have different permission levels:
| Role | Capabilities |
|---|---|
| Admin | Full control over project settings and members |
| Member | Create and manage work items, cycles, modules |
| Guest | View and comment (limited editing) |
